There are many reasons a tooth could require a root canal. The most common reason is an infection due to decay, which leads to an abscess. In an effort to save the tooth, the dead/dying material or “pulp” inside the roots of the tooth is removed. The root’s canals are then cleansed, shaped and sealed with a filling material.
Since a root canal is also robbing the tooth of its moisture, a crown is needed following a root canal procedure. Without a crown a root canal is doomed to fail due to fracture or re-infection.
